Just a quick example marie.

Use some form of a selction tool in your editing software and remove everthing except your subject then paste it over a new background! :)

edit: and I know it looks not so good, I just spent a minute on it! :)

This is just rough, but I think its a good direction to go in. I think the main problem is that the background is too in focus, some selective blurring would make for pretty bokeh instead.

Also just my personal opinion but I dont think the border adds anything to this photo. Did you happen to sharpen this photo, by any chance?

not sure =] I was interpreting it as she wanted to completely change a boring/distracting background! :)

Yes but not on another background..
I mean... something completely abstract that would blend with the main subject as it they were part of a painting...
I wish I had better words...

I used the clone tool to get rid of what is not pretty in the background, but it's not really what I'm looking for...

Are you talking about HDR photos?

After making an HDR, you could easily mask out the main subject in the picture to create a painterly feel to the background.

LOL
It's true ;)

Too much detail and no focal point. Colors are misconstrued and over saturated. Everything just looks... dirty.

And don't forget the nasty ass halo artifacts that come with 99% of HDRs.
