$1500 should get you a reasonable body. Did you prefer new or is second hand okay? Could probably pick up something full frame for ~$1500.

Where abouts in Aus are you?

That's what I was thinking, skip out the compact and go for a used FF DSLR. You'll be doing yourself a favour.

and get some pro lenses like the 24-70 f2.8 and Nikon's equivalent to EF 135 f2L, EF 24mm f1.4L II and EF 35mm f1.4L. It'll probably take awhile to save money for all these but in my opinion it's totally worth it :D

edit:
and welcome back :D haven't seen you posting in here for a long time :p

yeh haven't been posting much cause i've been lazy and not taking many photos (i'll blame my lil sister for loaning my computer connection cord for the year ... )
i'm thinking the 1st thing i wanna do is get a body with a 50mm lens and maybe something else then build a collection of lens from there

Cool mate, I live in Melbourne.

For for a second hand 5d Mark II or a D700 if you can fit it in your budget. It'll be worth it if this is your career path.

Brand/body doesn't matter as long as it's Canon or Nikon and you are comfortable with it in your hands.

Lenses though... Canon make better primes, hands down. The top range zooms from both brands perform perfectly.
