From what I have seen the rule of thirds isn't really that important in portrait photography as it is when shooting landscapes.
Here is tutorial that I find quite interesting:
http://digital-photography-school.com/10-ways-to-take-stunning-portraits

The edited versions look great though I am not a fan or this "Russian farm girl" outfit/look :p

Have you tried with another card?
and what kind of SD card are you using?
I always try to avoid those cheap unknown brand name cards and stick to Sandisk Extreme cards because they are fast and extremely reliable.

thanks for the tutorial i'm going to read it after i get off here :D
i have not tried with another sd card yet, but i'm going to today.

and thanks! :D

If you don't want criticism, why post your work on a discussion forum? I've done some real obscure things to appease clients but it doesn't mean they are the be all and end all of photographic aesthetics.

I don't mind the first shot but the exposure is way too hot and her hands are cut off.

Sleepy eyes isn't bad, I think the crop could be tighter. You seem to have a lot of dust on your sensor.

Oh I never said I did not want criticism! I just wanted to get the filter drama behind me before I started.

I also wish her hands would not have been cut off, I really hate doing that, but for some reason I liked it with this shot. I don't know what it is about it.
And good idea with cropping the sleepy eyes photo. No dust, it's a subtle texture to give it a "dusty" look.

Good post editing. Unfortunately, in my city there isn't much of a market for this sort of post editing.

Thanks. And that's a shame! A lot of people around here love it.

plus you definately need to work on how to use given light. that harsh light / shadow on her face looks so distracting and just not good.

I know :D I was planning on working on it that day, because I know it needs some improving. However like I stated, my SD card stopped working 30 minutes into shooting.

Unlucky :/

Don't shoot in direct sunlight, try look for well lit shade or diffused light (like through a window). Direct sunlight will kill skin tone and highlight every imperfection on the subject's face :/

Yeah that's where I was walking to when the card messed up! I was shooting in some harsh sunlight but spotted some shade a good walk away. I need to go back there soon.
