A studio is a different kettle of fish plus he is shooting with speed lights so I think his max sync is 1/200th :/
It's true what you say about ambient being closer to daylight and hence flash than tungsten, just saying though there are workarounds to what you can do to balance light and I am not attempting to educate YOU on the subject but let him know he has options. He could also throw a CTO on his flash, leave his overheads on, kill the outside light and balance the light in this manner, that's if he wanted to use a slower shutter speed.
I don't know why his max sync is 1/200th ... must be his camera. I think most cameras are doing 1/250th max with a few gems throughout the various line-ups that will allow 1/500th ...
