I was thinking of gettng either a UV or even polarizing filter...
Any recommendation?

Graduated neutral density. It's a filter with a gradient over it that darkens on half of the photo. It's extremely useful when taking landscape shots with then sky is alot brighter. With the GND filter, the camera can expose for those two within it's dynamic range.

I also agree with mr Lithfkn here but I think you will need to use either a GND filter to get a proper exposure of both the sky and ground or try to make a HDRi which can be hard with most Canon cameras because all except for 1D series only allow you to shoot 3 exposures using exposure bracketing which is far from enough to make a good HDRi. You can use a tripod but the slightest movement like when you change settings on your camera would make the images out of alignment and Photoshop is pretty bad at aligning pictures
As for the contest. I guess you could also use fill flash when shooting plants and trees during sunset/sunrise.

Speaking of HDR I saw a funny graph posted in some other photography forum and it's kinda funny but also true at least to some extent:

EDIT:
not all silhouette shots are bad. I have seen some awesome ones like this one here:

When I first started JSPing, I said the same. I was so bored of pictures of flowers and cats. But gf likes flowers so I took pictures.

oh hi :)

to Marie: I don't think your flower and plant shot are bad at all. I've always liked your shots. Don't be so negative on yourself :)

coz jsp = not considered internet. a jsp friend is a true friend. Someone you give your bank account and SS number to.

ty

But I've seen the winners of previous years with different themes for the contests...
And wow they are REALLLLLY pro...
Even if the prizes are not exuberant, people who enter have incredible high quality stuff....

But I could really use that 500$ in photo gear...
I'm not doing it for the glory, I'm doing it so I can upgrade :p

But I already took a few more shots, thinking about light....
Too bad Flickr s being a dick about uploading on dial-up... :(
I can't show them till I go to work on Friday...
