The 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 is a very good all purpose lens. It'll let you experiment with different zoom lengths without having to purchase multiple lenses.
My first lens for my Nikon SLR was the 55-200 4.5-5.6 VR. It isn't the best lens in the world but it will do the trick, especially if you're just learning.
I will say that the 70-200 2.8 is probably the best lens I've ever used.
