Cool stuff mate.. what was your exposure?

Meh, i hate how if i import the photos using lightroom. The exif data isn't intact.

Anyway here it is.

Mode- Manual
ISO- 100
Aperture- F11
Shutter- 1/80 sec
Focal Length- 280mm

With my crop sensor of 1.6x, it's essentially a effective focal length of 448mm

The pic shown is a 100% crop.

It should be sharper at 100% yeah? Any chance of getting a faster shutter speed? Maybe bump the ISO to 400 and shoot at f8 or 5.6? The moon is sitting on one focal plane.

Such a massive focal length + the movement of the earth and the moon needs a faster shutter speed.

Well it should but less sharp if displayed at 100%.

I could easily jack up the ISO and increase my shutter speed. But i was using my tripod and wanted to use ISO100 to prevent any noise in the black sky.. so i didn't worry about the shutter speed too much. For one shot.. i went as low as 1/4 of a sec :D

The bolded point is pretty interesting. I never thought of it that way.. but i mean.. there couldn't be a whole lot of movement tho right? :D

I never went anywhere like that when I was a kid. Farthest I went was an 8 hour drive to see my uncle and cousins for Christmas. :)

Sorry I was eluding that a 70-200L should be pretty sharp at 100%

haha well, the earth rotates at around 1000 mph at the equator, then factor in the movement of the moon.

Check out the Astro forum on POTN. They have some fantastic stuff there.

Tonight's moon is really round and i decided to take another stab at it with lithfkn's suggestion of using a higher shutter speed to counter the rotational speed of the earth.

ISO-100
Aperture- F11
Shutter Speed- 1/125
Focal Length- 448mm

100% crop :)

It does look kinda flat for a full moon :(

I think i like the half moon better :D

Full moon = no shadows :D

The idea of a fast shutter speed can be good, but I think you can go up to 1/10s if you need to.

In my opinion the quality of the air above your head is more important than the moon/earth movement.
Moon's light has to cross all the atmosphere before reaching your camera, so aim for a very clear sky, no clouds and very low humidity. Maybe a slightly windy night can help you, it will remove the smog and such.

Keep posting your attempts, they are very interesting!

the full moon really looks a lot more flat, but I think that adds something mysterious to it.
