Why?

If you're going to spend that much money might as well get an entry level DSLR.

If he's looking at the powershot series, I think it's safe to assume that he's not looking to spend that much.

He stated he's in the army.
A DSLR should be completely out of the picture....

You forgot Sigma DP1 and DP2 :p
both Panasonic and Olympus seem to be pretty awesome. They are basically compacts with DSLR sensors and interchangeable lenses :O

nah i didnt forget them. I dont think they would be good for this kind of use. Theres no zoom and you cant change lenses on them.

Sensor on those pana and oly cameras are smaller than on dslr, but still much bigger than in eny point and shoot. With interchangeable lenses and slr like controls theyr more like hybrid cameras, they dont have mirror or shutter built in(thats why the small size), they work like point and shoot in that aspect(electronical shutter).

That samsung nx will kick ass with its 1.6x crop sensor.

ah I forgot about the prime lenses in DP series -.-
well Olympus makes 4/3rds dslrs too :p
though I question those four thirds sensors in DSLR but they are really gosu in compacts :D
hmm I have seen sample pictures taken by Samsung point and shoot cameras and they are pretty awful compared to competing Canon and Panasonic products
lets hope this new nx will be better :)

Nx has same sensor size than canon 40d for example. You cant compare camera with that sensor size to eny point and shoot. Point and shoots have sensor size of something like 6x crop from full frame, thats like really tiny..

uh what I meant is like those tiny sensors in p&s there are huge difference in quality or whatever in those larger sensors as well. I mean just look at the difference between Fujifilm F200exr and some of those Sony and Nikon p&s :p or the 12mpixel sensor in Nikon D300 and the awful 15mpixel sensor in Canon 50D which are roughly of the same size
