Lenses depend on what you want to shoot. A fast 50mm lens (35mm lens for cropped bodies) is always good to have for anything, they're light, and can work in low light situation, also, they're cheap.
For wildlife, it depends, if you want sweeping panoramas, a wide lens is awesome, Nikon's got the best wide lenses, no contest (including a beautiful 13mm lens that's on sale on eeebay now for $17k). if you want to do macro photography, you'll need something like a 105mm macro minimum, with a 200mm being better suited for shooting insects and such.
For far away animals and sport, you'll want a telephoto, depending on what situations you'll find yourself in, you can get a low light model for lots of $$ or a cheaper, slower lens. A good zoom telephoto would be good here, a prime, while cheaper wouldn't be as useful.

thanks
but 1/2 of that went straight over my head, well the bit about: "A fast 50mm lens (35mm lens for cropped bodies)"
yeah will be getting a tele lens for sport and wildlife
and will look at getting a wide angle, soon after
will be staying away from marco photography for now

very user-friendly and well.. cheap for its possibilities

you should get a 18-55 & 55-200 lens kit for something around 900$

First tip:
A camera is only as good as the lens it has attached

Second tip:
canon make the better lenses

Not too sure I agree with the latter point. Some Canon lenses are better than their Nikon equivalent and some Nikon lenses are better than their Canon equivalent.
IE, Canon's fisheye is a hell of a lot better than Nikons, but Nikon's ultra wide zoom is much better than any ultra wide zoom from Canon.

I've got zero experience with them, but most of them (aside from Zeiss lenses, but they're MF only) are of lower quality than their Nikon/Canon counterpart. There are a few exceptions, but not many.
