if she was behind the window its likely the flash would have made it harder to see.
i think i like the color in the 1st and the 2nd picture for composition but they would have looked a lot better from a point without a window but i don't blame you for wanting to stay inside as its been pretty insane here a woman died yesterday cause a tree got blown over 100km/h winds and its been raining pretty badly too.
how are the horses coping with the storms do they get frightened?

Window and screen were open... that's why you see a vertical line on the pictures.... water on the camera....
I knew it was going to be a bad one cause the horses were nowhere to be seen... they were hiding in the shelter on the other side of the barn...
Later on it was calm but another storm was approaching.
That tme the horses stayed calm, so I knew there was nothing to fear.

Animals are so good to predict those things..
So if the horses are afraid, you won't see me outside lol!!!

I didn't think about using a flash...
I was pointing at the sun so it slipped out of my mind to try the flash..
And focus?
I wish I had more control over it...
It was a wall of rain moving so this is why it is very hard to see further away...

the flash would have made little to no difference and spoiled the picture.

its better to experiment, so trying flash... longer exposures, different ISO's etc etc otherwise you'll never progress and get different results. A lot of great photographs are done due to experimenting. Just trying to help here ;)
