look around, maybe you can find a used D70.

Defiantly don't buy the cheapest one you can get.

also look at the Sony a-200.

Not bad on the wallet and i love mine. Plus, it will be cheaper on lenses in the long run.

I'd go with the Olympus or even look into the Sony Alpha series, I've heard that the A200 series is great and I love my A300. Right now you could get an A230L, which is the A230 body and a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 zoom lens. Here are the specs for that and a link, its about $550 for that.

Get an Olympus UZ SP 5XX type. Its cheap and you can create very good photos with it.

Here are some of my shots with the camera:

If I was on a low-budget I'd either go for a D40 or a D60 with a kit lens. I'd than go buy a 1.8f /50mm lens (only like $100) to use for portraits and closeups and use the kit for scenery. Trust me, if you like portraits you want that lens ;D

The D40 is a 6mp, but it is a very nice camera to learn with. All the options are displayed more graphically so that you can actually see what is going on.
