It's honestly the D90 replacement....it has pretty much the same tech specs as the d90..and for a few hundred dollars less.
With a kit lens, the D5000 is like $899 on Amazon.

What's your point? You already proved you don't know much about photography, so you don't need a complicated camera, and you don't need more MP 'cause you won't be printing anything at large sizes.

i think it's old camera without any support.
low battery and 6MPx is still low i think and
it's not only "for printing" it's just 6MPx
maybe i'am wrong ;]

thx for opinion!

Of course there's support for it, it's the entry level DSLR from Nikon, it'll have support untill they release a new entry level DSLR, and even then, they'll still provide support for it.
The battery on my D50 is fine, I don't see it being a problem on the D40, certainly last long enough for hundreds of shots with flash.
You don't need more than 6MP if you never plan on printing anything larger than A4 size.

The D40 is not an 'old' camera. It came out in late 2006, early 2007, and is the perfect camera for someone that wants a bit more manual control over a point and shoot camera.
You can apply the money you save vs. getting a more expensive camera and buy accessories for it.
Lenses, flashes, lighting kits, tripods, etc.

Otherwise, you can buy a D60 and get more MP, and be able to use older lenses and other random equipment that won't work with the D40.

You probably aren't going to need anything higher than that. Unless you want to do video with the camera, there is no reason to get the D90 or D5000 for your situation.

As stated earlier ... D40 or D70 ... which is great because you can pick them up second hand for pretty cheap AND they allow you to sync your flash at any speed. David Hobby uses them still (yes he still has the D3, etc.) ... and if they are good enough for him they will be good enough for you. (Really, do you need billboard size prints??)

I say get the more inexpensive camera, buy GOOD lenses as an investment, then as your ability grows hopefully so will be your pocket book. By then you will get into lighting because that is the difference between taking a picture and making a picture and subsequently is the difference between an amateur and a pro. Then retire your D40 or D70 to be a back up and buy a nicer, better, pro line camera ....
