I'd still suggest getting a mega cheap film SLR and playing around with that instead of spending more than 200 on a DSLR.

i don't think a film SLR would be best to start off a beginner

if you want a new camera you could buy a sony A200 with kit lens for $500

canon and nikon are 'big hit' cameras meaning you will get good quality gear, whatever you pay.

can you be a bit more specific on how much you are willing to spend?

Why not? With the restriction of 36 shots per film you actually have to make an effort to take good photos, instead of taking hundreds of crap snapshots.

I think that's his point. With such limited shots per roll of film, it leaves less room for error.
And since it's your first camera you'll need to expirement with it and won't always take amazing pictures your first try, so with a DSLR you'll have more room to get better.
Atleast that's my interpretation.

I just bought a Canon Rebel XSi dslr and I love it, but it's a little pricy. I paid $750 for mine :\

I have the same opinion as you. I think on sight the dslr is the cheapest.

I also have the XSi/450 from Canon.

Personally, in my own experience, knowing you've only got limited film makes you strive for better shots. Digital just invites laziness.

I know what you mean, I learned on a 55mm film camera in Photography class last year.
But I'm just saying he'll be able to learn from the pictures he takes, and the more of those pictures he can take he'll get better.

I know in class last year, there were plenty of times I wish I could have taken the picture again but the conditions weren't the same the second time.
And if I were able to take more pictures or even been able to see the picture [even when it's on a small LCD] after I took it to adjust it and take it again.
