If you dont wanna lay on the ground, i belive your camera has a live view mode! I actually use it quite a lot for precision focusing, like zooming into an object and manually adjusting the focus, its pretty useful :D

Well I have taken quite a few pictures by using the LiveView but I didn't want to use it when taking pictures of cats though because you have to be fast and keep the object in focus all the time while trying to get a decent composition. I really do prefer taking pictures of cats indoor because then I could just crawl around and lay flat on the ground or whatever lol but cats do act a lil bit differently when they are outdoor though ^^
