Oh pfft. I am also an amateur kinda really got serious with photography last summer and for the most part I would just take a lot of mindless snapshots without really putting much effort. It was until like 2000 pictures later when I have had some more clue about what I should do and shouldn't do and how to choose the subject wisely and all that that I actually started to really try to take some more serious pictures lol but I still wouldn't mind taking snapshots though because it's kinda fun . The first thing that I see when I look at either picture is the hair. If you are trying to draw attention to the eyes, make the hair a bit overexposed and the rest of your face a bit darker.
You can also highlight things like eyebrows and eyelashes so that they draw more attention to that area of the picture.

Also, your face kinda fades out at the left side and blends in with the background...which is artsy in a way but its kinda distracting. If anything, I would outline the face a little bit so that there is some contrast between
the background and your face.
Otherwise, good shot.
