What? you cant change the shutterspeed? You using some auto mode or manual? If your using some auto mode, just put the camera on manual mode and flash will match the flash power to what ever shutter speed, iso or f-number you got on camera. If its not too dark i suggest you will use the cameras settings, so that the exposure meter shows -2 to -1, allso dont shoot the flash straight at the subject. Pull that white paper(what ever its called) and that softener screen out, and set the flash to about 45 degrees so that the white paper reflects light to subject and other light goes around the room.
Allso dont be afraid to crank up the iso if you need to have more get more background light, since all that flash light hits wont be nearly as grainy
