Yes, that is correct.
HP5 is a very good film to start on, it's relatively high speed, produces good results, and has a relatively large latitude.
You can then move to stuff that's more interesting like Delta 100/3200 or TMax.
Make sure you buy 36 exposure film, not 24.

Shooting on film is a way to get good, your exposures are limited, so you have to think about them more.
