You don't need to be knowledgeable about photography to make a comment about it. Hell, if I asked you to properly analyse a piece of work I'm sure you'd struggle with it, because I'm sure there are some concept you're not familiar with when it comes to talking about a piece of art.

no he doesnt mean that.

I think he means that he doesnt like people coming into this section posting and saying stuff like

'me no like. no focal'
or

You don't need to know jack about photography to be able to criticise art. Of course knowledge about stuff like depth of field, shutter speed, ASA, etc helps, but it's not neccesary.

In real life spammers do not get a +1, they do in here! Therefor I think they need to know a bit more about photography. Not the random "Nice pic".

Who cares if people just post "nice pic" though? It's not as if it's hurting anyone, and nor are there so many people that do that that it becomes any sort of nuissance.

Hell, I'm sure the majority of the people that post "nice pic" aren't capable of expressing in correct terms why they think it's nice, because they've simply never had any sort of art education.

I did not say make a comment. I said Criticize. It doesn't make any seance at all to criticize somebody's work without any of your own work to show first.

What the fuck do you think an art critic does? Wether or not you've posted any artwork is absolutely irrelevant. I can criticise someone's drawing technique without being capable of drawing myself.

Wow...You are not understanding the concept here at all.

How would you be able to give advice and help to somebody if you have no understanding of drawing? What would you tell them?
You need to have some basic understanding about drawing in order to view the drawing the way an artist who draws would be able to.

Yeah, sorry Spencer, but I'm not a huge fan of "Only criticize my work only if you have your own work to show"

It's almost like I'd use their work against them to judge; just to bypass their criticism, just cause I think they're work isn't good. That's just the way I see it, anyway. I think it's irrelevant. Also, look at the people on shows like "American Idol" or "So you think you can dance" ... I am sure they know their stuff, but they don't dance or sing as good as the people they are judging. smile.gif

Well, while I can't personally draw, I'd be able to see if lighting was wrong, or the technique was bad, etc, so I'd be able to make a comment regarding things like that.

I think you really need to educate yourself on the concept of art criticism. I'm surprised you haven't covered it in your photography class.

They have. I'm actually talking to my prof. right now.

"Jenn Lee says:
I ignore those that don't have anything to show in comparison or I reply with "thanks for your opinion, it would be nice to see some of the work of yours""

When random people comment on my work with no work to show their own understanding of photography, I don't like it.
Which is what I stated from the beginning.

@Chantal7, I never stated "Only criticize my work only if you have your own work to show."
I stated that if you are going to say something is wrong with my photo, please don't just talk...show.
