Lol, dunno where you would find a Mark-I for $500 used...
That's like finding a Ferrari for $50k used. Not gonna happen.

edit: and a 40D is about $200-300 more than a 450d.
$1099 Amazon (body only)

You want some lenses too, right?

I would suggest Nikon D60/D40X (Or if you can find one, a D50)
OR, a Canon XS/1000D.

All of which are very great beginner dslr's.

I wouldn't go out and drop $1000+ on a DSLR if it's your first dslr...

Edit: @ Antichrist, a Mark II is $6499 (USED, reg $12,000 Amazon.ca)
So, how much would 1 step lower be? My guess is around the $3K spot.

I got my markI used for 350€, thats bit under 500$ afaik.

40d is only about 100€ more expencive than 450d(counting with cashback) atleast here, naturally 450 will come with kit lens and 40d without, but i dont think enyone will want the kit lens afterall enyways. 40d is twice as better as 450d(imo) and two times better electronics usually cost way more than two time the price. 450d doesent give nearly enything better than 400d, other than better lcd, still it costs way more, but thats only because its never model and old models are sold cheap, so they dont get stuck in some warehouse.

MarkII cant be that much, theyr sold used for around 1.2k €, i bet u got some old prices there mate. Even new markIII doesent cost that much

Allso i would take d40 instead of d40x, since d40x isnt better on other than more mega pixels, but since its same sized sensor, so it has higher pixed density and not better noise removal, so it will make more noise at higher iso.

I think for 550 you can probably get a Canon Digital Rebel XS/EOS 1000D or Canon Digital Rebel XTI with kit lens. They are both very good cameras with very similar performances.
I believe Nikon D40 and D60 are just too uhh stripped down and they can't use all the newer Nikon lenses.

lol it's funny that you just made this thread because I just got home from the local camera store where I just bought a new EOS 40D biggrin.gif

well I believe the prices on cameras varies quite a lot depends on where you live. I just bought a EOS 40D couple of hours ago and I paid 1020 Canadian dollars with tax and at the same store XSI/450D body cost around 750 Dollars with tax so 40D does cost quite a bit more and I believe it should do because it is just quite a lot better than the Rebel series.

EDIT: i will post some NEW photos soon biggrin.gif

Yeah i'd need a lense ofc, but I figured I'd buy a camera that came with a lense, not just the body.
Or is that a bad idea?
Like I said, this is my first camera so I don't know what specifications to look for.
It's the first camera I've used, just the first I want to own.

And can you fill me in on some of the termenology like "af" and I've seen some other abreviations being used around the fourms like "iso" and "hdr"

So which would you recommend guys? The Nikon or the Canon?

EDIT: I said I'd pay a max of 550, but doesn't mean it has to be that much.
If there is one that's cheaper and still nice let me know ^^
And thanks for all your help guys

Iso = International Standarization of Organization (Don't ask me why it's abbreviated differently lol) and it's a setting. It has to do with how sensitive the shot becomes towards light. I believe another term for iso is asa but I'm not sure :S Atleast my dad keeps calling iso that and my on flash it says asa instead of iso.
Hdr = High dynamic range, it's basically three photos merged into one. All shots are taken at the spot except that one is underexposed, one regularly exposed and one overexposed.
af = auto-focus. Self explanatory there xD
