Only for close-up subjects though.
Don't try using Macro for a landscape unless you want the entire photo out of focus lol!

TV and AV are either for allowed longer shutter speed (I use them for lightning photographs as it keeps the shutter open longer or shorter)

lol

i learned somthing new then, i was just using P for macro shots, but ill use macro mode next time!!

Is this the same with the other basic modes - should i put it into sport mode for sport and landscape mode for landscapes?

well saying that the P mode lets u set it for landscapes and portrait without taking some nice settings away.

whatcha think?

I don't use those preset Landscape, Portrait, Night etc. settings.
You will also get better shots using a Macro lens when you put it in Macro mode too.

how do you get it so that the iris is in colour but the rest of the eye has little-no colour?

No. It's just photo shopped.
Selective coloring.

Select the entire area around the iris with the lasso tool, and turn it B&W.
The boost the contrast up a bit.
Easy.

It's the same was people get this kind of photo:

I didn't take those btw, but it's the same concept.
