Nice hahaha.

I haven't got my parents their gift yet...they have to wait till January. (I took up an extra day a week for December working for extra $$)

I'm either getting my mom a Swarvoski crystal polar bear.
OR
I'm getting my family a 47" flastscreen :CD hdtv.

I'm aiming a bit more towards the flastscreen, that will leave me a bit of $ behind so I can also buy
guitar hero world tour and my family can be like rock starzz u kno ? lol

Well I'm actually damn surprised. I think they're kinda just happy I have a hobby rather than just messing with my comp :3 Yeah, I tried loads of different on the G9. The difference here is that I'm totally inexperienced in using the viewfinder to take pics as opposed to the lcd. Do you know if you can set it so you can use the lcd instead?

I don't think Nikon D80 has Live view but personally I think the Live view function in dslrs is over valued and unnecessary. It's kinda funny you asked about it because I was reading a thread about Live view in a photographyforum and this is what one of the members said about it:

A DSLR is not really built to be held at arms length looking at a view screen like a small lightweight point and shoot. Even with small glass such as a 50mm. It is designed so that you stabilize the thing with your left hand and control it with your right hand looking through the viewfinder.

Live view can be useful in limited application such as macro on a solid support such as a tripod or when ever you have solid support and a non moving subject. Live view however is not something that should make or break a camera purchase as it is truely a minor feature in the DSLR world.

I am sure eventually you will find looking through the viewfinder a lot better and practical way to take pictures. tongue.gif

yes. Liveview in dslr's is useless.
The reason being is that in most dslr, the live view function is ridiculously annoying.

You have to first set it to live view, then set it to be able to focus in live view.
Then while in live view you have to press a special button (mine if the AF-lock button) that will focus in live view.
This entire process takes like, 10-30 seconds depending on a subject.
and that, is a long time if the subject may be moving.

edit: and yes, viewfinder is much sexier.
Makes you look more pro, unlike the "soccer moms" taking pictures of their kids while holding the camera an arms length away looking at an lcd screen!

I used to use Live view too when using my old point and shoot even though it actually had a viewfinder but due to it's smaller size I find live view more practical.
But when it comes to DSLR which are a lot larger in size it really is a pain in the butt to hold your camera at arms length all the time plus as Blackrose pointed out Live view on most DSLRs are quite impractical to use. I know on EOS 40D you can only autofocus with only the middle focus point selected so you can't take the advantage of the whole 9 cross type autofocus system it offers while in Live view mode and I find the view through the LCD a lot less clear and detailed as through the viewfinder.

btw I am glad that we finally agree on something mr blackrose tongue.gif
