uh USM is short for Ultra Sonic Motor and it makes the lens focus fast and makes almost no noise
I've heard those lenses without USM, like the kit lens you've got with your XSI/450D, are slow and noisy tongue.gif

hmm if you are into night photography you probably should get a lens with wide aperture. the ef 50mm f/1.8 II is a cheap lens and good one even though the build quality is poor but I am sure if you dont plan on to drop it or anything it should be satisfy your need for a night photo lens unless you want to zoom too. then you may want to look at ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM which cost like 1200 dollars or the much cheaper Sigma or Tamron 17-50 something f/2.8 lenses

Haha. Thanks for info. biggrin.gif

Maybe the ef 50mm f/1.8 II would be nice. I think I will buy it, allthough it is very cheap and made of plastic.

or if you have some more money you could go for 50mm f/1.4 USM. its whole a lot better with faster and quieter focus and wider aperture but it cost like 3 times more which is still quite cheap. If I ever buy a prime lens I'd go for that one

Haha. I do not have the money for that right now.

But next week I will try the 50mm f/1.8 USM. Because I borrow it from a friend.

Good work mate!
