I would pick the G10 if I was to chose one.
Good price.
Made by Canon-Your getting good quality.
Good specs on the camera.

Thanks again for the help. I will probably be messaging you again whenever i need a camera that isn't point and shoot.

Even if you pick up a point and shoot now, and get a DSLR later, you'll still have the point and shoot camera for something to carry with you when you don't feel comfortable taking your 800 dollar camera out with ya. Or even if you want to take something compact.

I'm not sure what kind of party you were talkin' about, lol. I wouldn't be takin my cam with me to a party with drunks, I will probably get drunk myself and would be careless with the thing. But it is nice to have a good quality camera. I noticed quite a difference from point and shoot and SLR's. It's just a totally new area in photography, damn well worth it to explore if you feel you want to get more into the hobby more seriously tongue.gif

But in general, I'd go with the SLR. Point and shoot.... SLR's have the same options if you want to go with the camera's auto settings, so all you have to do is "point and shoot" and the other detailed stuff is there for when you want to go more further into photography biggrin.gif

Yeah i am looking to spend around 5 to 8 hundred dollars on a new camera and since i am completely retarded whenever it comes to anything to do with photography i was wondering if anyone here could send me in the right direction.  Thanks for any help

nah I dont think you are retarded, maybe a newbie but definitely not a retard wink.gif I am sure if you spend some time and energy taking photos and read some tutorials and stuff you will become quite a good photographer. About taking photos at parties. It really depends on what kind of person you are, if you are into getting loaded and do funny stuff or you are the kind who just like hang there with your friends and enjoying yourself while stay sober. I have been to a party and a couple of concerts with a 2000 dollar camera and I still managed to take a few photos and left there with my camera and myself intact.

here are the photos I took:

ok those two are messed up because the back LCD on my then 3 days old camera broke earlier that day, unrelated to that party lol so I didnt know how to change white balance and some other settings but I later found out that I could by checking the info in viewfinder and top LCD.

I only had some wine at that party and managed to stay sober while the others got quite drunk and they actually went out to a night club later but I was kinda sad because my spanking new camera broke so I didnt go with them sad.gif

ok this one was taken at a concert after I got my camera fixed and there were LOTS of loud and drunk people hanging there but I still managed to take a few pics of the crowd and the performers

I have to admit that those pics arent good at all because I only had my very first DSLR for a very short time back then but I do hope to take some really good pics when I go to parties or concerts or whatever in the future

this one was taken at a different concert but it was more crowded I had to climb up on a table to take this one lol

EDIT: I guess I must be tired and my mind was thinking about that party and the concerts I went to last summer so I kinda forgot to tell you my opinion regarding your choice of camera. I believe for 800 US dollars you will probably be able to get either Rebel XTI or XSI with a good lens, since you want to take pics at parties I think you want to have a fast lens with wide aperture, like EF 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4USM or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lenses. well I think either Astragony or Antichrist may will give you better advice smile.gif

I would surely get the Panasonic DMC-LX3 if I were in the market for something to meet your need.
It's pretty much the best deal out there at the moment.

If I knew more about photography and wanted a nice compact I would get the Sigma DP1 (I might get myself one for christmas even though I own a 1D mk3).
The sigma takes incredible pics BUT it's REALLY SLOW and has a fixed focal length.

Heya,

atm im also looking for a camera and with help from the camera pros on jsp i have decided on getting a Canon EOS 450D (rebel xsi)

im however only interested in dslrs over compacts (more features, more fun) the two entry levels - mid range i was stuck on choosing are:

Nikon D60 with 18-55mm (vibration reduction lens) $539.49
Canon Rebel Xsi 18-55mm (image stabilized lens) $639

Im still leaning towards the canon atm, because it has more features and is a better camera, both of these cameras are not too big and can both be used on full auto, and will be similar to a compact.

However the two best compacts (so ive heard from various different reviews) are:

Canon G10 $433.94
Leica D-LUX 4 $829

As i said im going after the canon 450D (rebel xsi) but as these guys said to me, you should read loads of reviews, then go to a shop and see which one you feel most comfortable with, because if you choose a camera which you later dont feel happy holding, you're gonna regret getting it, which is not what you want!

I do hope this has helped!

I am currently leaning towards either the EOS 400D from Canon, the Powershot G10 or Panasonic DMC-LX3.

Price isn't a big deal as long as i don't go over like 800 bucks (which is how much i have left over after my christmas shopping. So its a present for me)

Another question: Should i just get a camera or a camera and another lens? So confused...

if you get the Panasonic DMC-LX3 (I really think it's better than the G10 in about everything) You won't need extra lens etc...
The camera is really nice, pretty much the best compact you can get.
