hmm I have heard that complaint quite a lot. so how much slower is a non-USM lens compared to USM? I remember using a Rebel XTI with kitlens(non USM) and it was still quite fast at auto focusing and the noise wasnt very loud either, compared to my 17-85 IS USM at least

well the af is reall slow since it has so much zoom i dont remember exacly but usm is like instant(atleast on the ones iv used) and this lens takes like 0.5-1 second to focus if its really out of focus, allso it wont focus in dark nearly as good

ah ok well I guess it has to be the large zoom range then. lol I think it only takes my lens like 0.1 second to zoom from infinity to almost macro and you barely hear any noise at all

Can't afford. It's almost triple the price.

have you ever considered buying used lenses? if you are lucky you can get some nice lenses at a very good price

I have considered it, but L lenses don't go down in price that much. I'm about to graduate college and get a full time job. Then I'll be able to get some nicer stuff, but it isn't really an option right now.
