I use 600EX-RT flash

Okay so here is my question, I have seen a lot of people using some kind of diffuser, and I am just wondering are they useless?
Worth to buy it or is it just useless?
Do you use any kind of diffuser?
Thanks in advance.

Photography is completely about light.

A diffuser is going to reduce the harshness of the light, and make it appear more natural (and not as if the light came from one small point). It's a tool, and sometimes you won't want one. It's definitely a must-have if you have a flash though.

I can tell you that the first couple things I'll be picking up whenever I decide to get a flash head is a diffuser umbrella, a diffuser cover to go right over the flash, and maybe a reflector umbrella (as well as just a big white cardboard sheet).

Yesyes, but if i bounce the flash without any diffuser and with a diffuser, do I see any difference?

on camera flash, bounced light is far superior to plain defused light
I only use a diffuser when I absolutely have to; ie outdoor event with no option of bouncing light

Would you use this http://whatdigitalcamera.media.ipcdigital.co.uk/11133/000003c20/a472/fong.jpg diffuser if you are going to bounce the flash?

Well, depends on what you want to shoot but in general diffusion is good.

In my opinion I say stuff the little speed lights and on camera flash.. get your self some LED panels and model the light and actually watch in real time what is happening with the light..

personally I think this is better: http://www.expoimaging.com/product-detail.php?cat_id=13&product_id=21

the gary fong was a very well marketed product that does not live up to the hype
the theory behind it, its there to spread the light around more evenly, and there for some of the light is meant to bounce off walls/ceiling etc
when you are indoors and this does happen, your subject comes out very flat as its so evenly lit with no shadows
if you are not indoors for the light to bounce off anything, then you are just effectively reducing your flash power and therefor wasting power

that does depend on what you are shooting, and how practical it is
perfect for still life/product shots

the LED panels nowdays are awesome, cheap and use such little panels
its also a bonus to see what happens in real time

Yeah man I use them for practically everything I shoot now :D

Products/still life definitely makes use of diffusion, but again, depends on the shoot/concept

then you either need to scout the place or google it
indoors/outdoors
if indoors how high is the ceiling? is it going to bounce light etc
would suggest a rouge flash bender in case you cant bounce the light
