7D is a great gamera for sports and video / action.
bit since you are saying you are just starting and havent looked around yet, you need to plan buying lenses to. Good ones. since quality comes from lenses, also low light capability comes from lenses and you will want good ones! believe me here! So i suggest buying sth more cheap.
Suggestions:
well i believe the small D5100 D3100 from Nikon are a joke, also the Canon 650 /600 / 550... but these are quite cheap and the quality is also very good.
If you want something bigger, go for a Nikon D7000 or Canon 60D and buy sth like a 24-70 2.8 (either brand, it`s 1300-1800$) maybe add a good wideangle (14-24 2.8 or 16-35 2.8 for another 1400$).
( the 24-70 shoud be essential for the kind of photography you do) but sooner or later you will want a wider angle or more zoom so decide between 14-24 2.8 / 16-35 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VR II from either Brand.

you will defnitly hate a 7D with kit lens and you will defnitly hate a 5D mark III with kit lens too. so get lenses first! try to find out what you like to shoot.
Btw. lots of people mentioned Framerates..... The chances of getting a better shot with high frame rates is only minimal, since you still dont know if the picture is sharp / you catched the right moment).
You will still have the best succeess rate taking the shot at the right time (no burst mode).
This was taken with a D700 and a poor 16-35mm lens and external flash ( you will want these too sooner or later)!

yeah he should definately invest in lenses BUT there is abosolutely nothing wrong with the 24-105 f4 kit lens from canon to start with (other option would be sigma 24-70 f2.8 although i dont like most 3rd party lenses)
as far as the entry lvl cameras nikon are superior to canon, but if you can afford rather go for a d7000 or the 7d (on a side note - has any1 tested the d3200? 20someting MP entry lvl camera :S worried about the noise it will produce)
