When a well known painter asks to use one or more of your pictures to do a painting (then sell it ofc)...

Thanks for replies :)

They use your photo.
Paint it. (Taking someone's property and making it their own by changing the medium it's presented in - using their own talents, skills and abilities)
Make money.

You gain exposure, they further their creativity and make a profit off their talent.
Your exposure gain leads to potential clients depending on what you do.

Often you may charge the painter, a small fee of course, for the photo you are selling.
If they aren't willing to pay you a small fee for the photo you have that THEY want to paint, then it's their loss, they won't have anything to paint, and in the long run
will be the ones without food on the table.

Thanks!
She is a abstract horse painter, her work is absolutely amazing, and she is looking for new material and after looking at my horse pictures, she contacted me and asked about it..
I told her I would be honored to provide her with photos, and asked her to let me know which one(s) she liked most and get back to me so we could discuss it...
But how much is a small fee?

No way. There are times where you do/give things for free to get exposure, this is not one of them imo.

Id at least ask for a commission..maybe 10-15%?

She could easily get horse pictures somewhere else. So you mine as well do it to get your name out there and she might donate.

Sounds good in word but will never happen in reality. The last time you saw a impressive image in a magazine, do you remember the photographer's name as well? Probably not. While we might see it as a free publicity, the advertising/ painter/ whatever company that wants the picture will just laugh at us since we got suckered into giving them an image free of charge where someone somewhere is getting paid $500- $15k for it.

If the painter specifically asked for her picture. It's something he/she liked about the pic, she wouldn't have asked otherwise since there are millions of horse photos with a simple google search.

I'd say ask for payment or at least a commission fee.

that's amazing marie congratulations! I do however agree with Eek and think you need to charge something for whatever photos she wants.... it is after all your work and your creativity, not hers nor anyone elses
