I have a friend who told me she has two little sisters who want to be photographed to start a portfolio to become child models... One is 8 and the other is 4. I'm at a loss because I don't do much potraiture so this is new ground and since I don't own any lighting equipment outside is my only real choice unless I try inside somewhere with window light.. any ideas?

I think with most young models.. the problem is that they don't look natural enough in front of the camera when posing. Getting them to relax and somewhat forget the camera is there should be the first step IMO.

Window lighting with frosted shower curtains make some excellent light btw ;)

just tell them you want to take some pictures so they will act cute or whatever. dont put pressure on them to make poses perfect or whatever, but for kids the cute innocent pictures are usually the best, not the "trained to hold this pose for hours" picture

Something like this hanged in front of the window makes an excellent diffuser.

As for lights, natural lighting will work just fine :]

id say for young kids you are overthinking it a bit.

show the modeling agencies or w/e how cute your kids can be and let them worry about the fancy shit

Cant say I agree. Theres like a trillion parents trying to break their kids into this industry, it would only be helping them to give them photos that stand out.

Its not like you just walk into an agency and your kid tap dances in front of agents or something xD
