Get the 1.8, 'cause it's dirt cheap, and you don't know the difference.

Use the extra $200 to save for a different lens.

I would go for Helios 77m 50mm f/1.8 and adapter ring with AF confirm - Why ? Cus this lens is sharp as hell and dirty cheap !
But if you want sty with Nikon go for f/1.8 you just won't seen the difference ;)

i dont think anything wide open is sharp.
1.8 isnt sharp at 1.8 but at like 2 they are rediculous. even moreso at 2.8

The fuck...? Lol. I wouldn't trade my 1.4 for a 1.8 and have saved $200.

But, with it being your first I'd just go with the 1.8 due to cost effectiveness.

If you plan to use it at fast apertures perhaps 1.4 (AFs one) is better.

If you will use it at f2.8-4 or smaller, that get 1.8 one.

Edit: on that camera I would buy 35mm 1.8...

Congrats on your camera! I have the same model and my impression is that it's a great camera!

That depends. the 35 1.8 is a great lens in many ways but it's not some kind of portrait lens.

The 50 1.8/1.4 is a great short tele and can be used as a portrait lens on the dx format as well.
