I went to the mountain end of afternoon yesterday....
Near the end I saw an owl!!! Yes!!!! A real owl!!!!
It was HUGE!!! And we were so impressed!
But it was end of day, so not much light..

Even at the highest iso setting of my camera it still was very dark....
I tried to edit it the best I could and also crop it...
Here's the result.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Program: Shutter speed priority AE
Date and Time (Original): 2010:05:28 19:17:05
Lens Type: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Photography-wise, not a good picture.
But, cool that you saw an owl.
Since you couldn't go any high than 5.6 you should shot the picture at 1/60

I think its a great shot!

On the one hand you need to be SO lucky to meet one... not just in the zoo, but out in the wild!!!
They are so shy and seldom and during the day they would know how to hide from our eyes...

Thus on the other hand, im sure many of us were already closer do one of them as we might think.
But we just could not see them hidden in the trees and branches because they are so well camouflaged.

I spend a lot of time running in the forest or so, but i never saw one in all the years...
This one is really HUGE and looking straight into the camera!!!
Its a beautiful one and very impressing indeed.

Im really jealous, but you deserved the shot by paying attention for the surrounding.
And of course, because of the good reaction and having the camera with you on that day.
Naturally a little luck is needed for something like this, but if one uses the watchful eyes
to see and pays attention to ones environment one can find such opportunities.

Most of them are nocturnal...
At night or during evening its so hard to get a good picture especially behind all the leafage.
And on top, i doubt many of us would spend most of their nights somewhere in the forest.

Thats why im fine with the light settings, the wonderful motive makes up for that by far :)
Congratulations on it, well done!

Agreed cool you saw an owl but what he said 1/60 would of been best.
I thought the XSi can go 3200? Invest in the a simple telephoto lens, the 75-300 is only 200 bucks... great for walking around in nature on a budget

1600 is max...
And I've been putting off for a few weeks the purchase of a simple 50$ polarizing filter....
Can't afford any lens at the moment :(
If I even have a chance to see an owl again I'll go down to 1/80 or maybe 1/60 :)

I would LOVE to visit Australia!!!!!
But I think I'll wait to be better geared in lenses, to make sure I get every photo opportunity!!!
I would also have to learn to NOT take macros of sharks and alligators... for obvious reasons....
And also not to handle every spider I see the way I do it here is Canada!!!
And remind me to raise my life insurance before I go there
