Ok. So I just got my cheapass canon 50mm 1.8 EF lens. Its my first prime lens and I thought it wouldnt hurt getting it. Before buying it, I had alot of people telling me that the autofocus in this lens is horrid, and today it proved it to me. I had huge problems getting my subjects focused right. 90% of the shots are rather blurry. and then, after 20 min of shooting my camera turned off ~~ Forgot to charge................. could have killed myself. I´ll be shooting some more as soon as possible. these two were the only ones I thought would be worth sharing with you guys. I hope I can get some tips and tricks on how to improve the performance of this lens, because atm, I`m not really impressed.

I have had that problem too; honestly I just kept taking photos till I got it right. It sucks too in darker lit rooms. When I was trying to take photos of my Christmas ornaments on my tree, it was dark, I used a tripod and everything and had quite the difficulty getting it focused right. I ended up turning on a light, auto focused to where I wanted it, switched it to manual focus so it wouldn't move on me, turned OFF the light and pressed the shutter. All of that sounds like you'd spend an extra bit of money for something better, I feel your pain, but I really do like this lens, and I think it just takes some time getting used to it. I am sure there are many ways to make your experience easier, but I am learning with this lens too!

I wonder why you are having such issues with the focus. I wouldn't think that there is such a difference in the canon prime and the nikon prime. I bought my nikon 50mm 1.4 last Augustish... I LOVE it. I shoot everything with it. My main problem with that lens, is I tend to abuse DoF badly when I use it. I want to use the larger apertures so much that I end up getting a part of my subject out of focus. Like this shot. See how I have the front of the shroom in focus then up towards the top it gets all soft... Perfect example.

I'm honestly not a fan of clean b/w-shots, but your first in here is pretty awesome

thank you.

@ Scuba:

I think the canon lens is almost famous for its poor build and autofocus. I dont know the Nikon lens but I guess its a bit more expensive and therefore IS abit better overall. I didnt have the chance to use a great DoF yet, due to the fact that my battery didnt last long as I said ^^
I`m gonna shoot as much as I can, as soon as I can tho.

@ Chantal:

Yeah I also think I´m going to get used to it sooner or later. But its pretty exhausting to deal with those issues atm ~

I´d like to hear some more opinions on the 2 shots I posted in particular.
Thanks

On deviantart you wont really get critique unless you´re a premium member, which I´m not.

Love the first shot, nice contrast, good lines, well exposed. Only niggle I have is I'd have preferred it with a greater DoF.

Second is ok, if a little over contrasted and under exposed.

Don't bother trying to get critique on DA, it won't happen, most people there don't know their dick from their elbow.

Even if you request critique, most people won't bother. Same with Flickr.
