I never used that 430 ex, but it has ettl like 580 ex. Put the flash on ettl(auto mode) and the flash measures the light needed with preflash(that you wont notice) and will be at 0 power(same as light meter on camera at 0), or you can change the power of the flash on -3 to +3, with 1/3 stops(just like light metering on camera). You can use the flash manually, but its pretty complex and you should have a light meter for that. You can use the ettl even when your camera is in manual mode.

What red lights on the camera? Are you sure ur not meaning the af assist beam? they got nothing to do with metering and they come from flash instead of camera if you put the flash on camera(unless you disable them).

I mean those. Ehm. I got a lot of work explaining my self.

When I have to forcus, the assist beams will find the right focus.

I dont quite undestand you, but those beams has nothing to do with metering. Enyways you only need those focusing in dark places, and that flash has really good af assist beams

I think he means something about the red lights on the flash itself; I think they go read to find the focus point(s). It's like a built in flash, to find the focus, it flashes in someone's face 10 times before it's all good to go, ready and focused. Is this what you mean?

I can not. xD

When the camera is set at manual mode A-dep, M, Av, Tv, P the flash do not have assist beams, but the flash will flash when I hit the shutter button, but the camera will use the settings if the flash was disabled. Like 10" secs and so on....
