Since the quality of zoom lenses has improved greatly, loads more people are using them over fixed focals.

Zoom lenses are probarbly the favourite because they are versatile but primes have so much going for them:

-Lighter and smaller
-Higher image quality
-Cheaper
-Less moving parts, less to go wrong
-Larger aperture (smaller f/)
-Suffer from little chromatic aberration

What type of lens do you perfer to use?

I prefer prime lens. I love my Canon 50mm 1.8. Cheap and sharp to the price. smile.gif

e/ And most of all smaller f/! Love it. biggrin.gif

A prime lens is one with a fixed focal length, a zoom is one with a range of focal lengths.

Personally, it really does depend on the lens, but I do have a soft spot for primes.

oh another advantage of the canon prime lens sub 200mm is they are black. if i were to buy one of them white lens for nature id have to get a camo cover!

there are some really nice primes... the 35-85-135 family is supposed to be unbelievable. but yeh ur right some of the wide angles (L) are very pricey.

Would a wide angle be a prime? Or is it under it's own category?

It can be both a prime or a zoom, depending on whether it's got a fixed focal length or not.
