Ok! I went out earlier this afternoon to take some test photos with my new point and shoot camera but I think I used the wrong settings something because those pictures taken with the p&s were really overexposed lol. I kinda did it just for fun and I wad kinda bored .

Two pictures taken at the exactly same spot with two different cameras using very similar settings.
I wonder why Powershot chose to use f/8 while eos 40D chose f/16 for this shot.

if you look at the windows on the 2nd pair of photos, you can see more detail on that truck or sign or whatever that thing is.

Is this just because of the wrong settings or what?

Probably just more to do with how the camera does light metering.

So you mean a point and shoot camera measures the light differently?
I used Shutter priority program on both cameras and used almost the same settings but yet the point and shoot chose a much wider aperture than the slr which I kinda find weird lol.

Well, they both have different sensors fitted in, so it makes sense that they will choose slightly different settings. And yeah, they probably measure the light levels in the photo differently.

Probably has to do with the fact that compacts have much less dynamic range so they try to underexpose to compensate.

You mean overexpose? because the pictures taken by the compact are way overexposed.



I see. That does make sense lol so I guess I will have to choose a much faster shutterspeed when shooting with a compact in broad day light.

I meant underexpose, if there is a reason there is more detail in the truck it's because the powershot underexposed a notch.

The 40D is far superior in shadow detail though.

oops I thought you were talking about the first two pictures. It's kinda annoying that the compacts seem so unpredictable I mean when you want to get proper exposure you would end up having a picture that could be either underexposed or overexposed. Maybe it's because I haven't got used to shooting that new point and shoot camera of mine lol.
