It's the lens's shadow.
When you have a lens that is really long, the flash sometimes hits the top of the lens creating shadow.
A way to avoid this is to tilt the lens up, and use bounce flash off a ceiling, wall etc.
OR buy a flash bouncer, which are like $20 maybe, or you can make one easily

I do have a speedlite 430EX, I am going to assume this will work? I just have to angle it differently instead of straight on?
