Well I have already created a very similar topic in another photography forum but I thought there maybe one or two of you guys who have used both cameras as well. This is what I posted:

OK! I will probably get a new camera body around new year and I have been reading a few reviews and forum posts regarding the quite new EOS 50D. Is it true that the higher ISO performance of that camera is only equal or worse than 40D (according to Dpreview)? I am into landscape and nature photography and I know FF bodies would be perfect for that but I do not want to and cannot wait another one or two months to save for a 5D. So I would be grateful if some of you guys who have used both the 40D and 50D could tell me if it is really worth investing the extra 400 something dollars to get the 50D. Thanks in advance

btw I have already read the reviews on Dpreview and I have owned a 40D until not long ago.

buy used 5d, those are sold about same price as new 50d. U could get used 5d even cheaper than new 50d

yes I have seen those cheap used 5D mk 1 but I am too much of a chicken to buy a used camera at least when it comes to my main camera. Maybe I am just weird but I think a camera that I am going to use quite a lot should be spanking new when I buy it, kinda like underwear, haha well that's a bad comparison but you know what I mean. lol but thanks for the advice though smile.gif

lol Unless I have a job as a professional photographer I do not think I will ever going to buy a NEW eos 1D mk3 for like 5 grand. rolleyes.gif Maybe it's something for you though.

Buy the 40d and save for an L series lense.

No point in having a more expensive camera if you have crappy glass, unless you're gonna make the jump to a 5D but it doesn't sound like you want to smile.gif

yeah you are probably right but I do have a decent lens which I bought with the 40D I had before, ef-s 17-85 IS USM. I will probably wait for a couple of months before I decide to buy another lens. My dilemma now is whether if it is worth spending 400 dollars more on a camera that has similar or worse higher ISO performance and according to Dpreview almost identical image quality as 40D. The only thing that I really like about the 50D is it's much better main LCD but I would be stupid if I'll buy it only for that. biggrin.gif

I wouldn't mind getting a 5D but I just do not want to buy a used one or spending 2-3k on a new camera because I kinda want to buy a car next year biggrin.gif so I will be able to drive around and take pics when the spring arrives happy.gif

Buy the 5d from some shop and u should get some 1 month warranty or some for it. Atleast here they allso check out the shutter count on the shops, so you know how much the shutter should last about. If you absolutely have to get some new camera, then buy 40d and some prime lens.

If you're set on buying new, I'd go with the 40D. I would rather have the 50D, but I don't think it's worth the extra money.

I'd go for better ISO performance, I don't know much about cameras, but I know my camera, at 1600 ISO - it's damn annoying. I alwayssssssssss get a noisy picture, no matter what. So I find myself NEVER using ISO 1600 (and that's the highest it can go on my camera). I wish I could go higher, so I don't have to use a tripod so many times. But what do I know, there could even be a way to use that 1600 ISO, without noise, but I don't even know about it biggrin.gif
