Minecraft.net (the offical website) or you can buy a minecraft card to activate an account at any store that sells game cards.

It's well worth the $20~ cost that they charge for it.

You can play minecraft free on private servers.
otherwise yea you need a legit copy to play on public servers.
sometimes you can find kids on forums selling for 5 bucks ect.
