nah I think once seasons (and their rewards) roll out people will start tryharding and not be retarded.
Or at least a leaderboards of some type
ffs
If anything...this game won't start to grow until 2 years from now when Blizzard pulls their heads out of their asses and gives us the new ranked system and seasons we have been promised for over a year now.
It's so strange to me that they put so little effort into this game. I understand they are pumping out new heroes every 3-5 weeks (most times) and that takes a lot of development and tweaking to try to balance them... but this game (obviously) has the potential to make them lots of money. Skins and buying heroes adds up, much like buying decks in HS. It's not required but it saves time and the average Joe knows this.
If they would get their shit together, reset seasons, and give out some sort of seasonal achievement for players reaching "X" rank by the end of each 4 month season I think (like you said) people will start taking things more seriously.
It really doesn't take much to smarten up a gaming community. Anything exclusive that can only be earned by some sort of limited-time achievement is always something players try to get. And the collectors in all of us will return season after season to try to get the newest reward. Especially in a game like HotS which is not overly time-dependant (like D3, for instance, requires 500+ hours each season just to be competitive on leaderboards because paragon points mean so much)... a casual player who puts in 10-15 hours a week can achieve far more on a game like HotS than they can on a game like WoW, D3 or even Hearthstone.
A few hours of dev time in making a reward mount that is different with each passing season would tidy up some serious issues with lack of competitive edge in this game. Why not even give out some reward money every season? Hell, Old School Runescape just gave away $10,000 for a deadman seasonal tourney... Blizzard could afford to take $25,000 per season and split it appropriately amoungst the top 200 players. Maybe even exclude players that are sponsored and pro-tier because they already make money for playing the game. Try to reward players who aren't making a living off the game to take it seriously.
