just try leveling up heroes till they hit lvl 5 / do quests / earn gold and buy the heroe you like

Yeah that's what I've been doing~ I think I'm lvl 7 overall now? and 1-2 heroes at 5+

QM seems hit or miss with team quality.

Get used to that, it will never change.

The goal of the game is to get to Hero League as quick as you can. So like Jay said, level free heroes each week to 5, collect the gold from those levels, use the gold to buy 10 heroes, move on to hero league
