Wanted the piggy bank :) and I do have 10 heroes,
I didnt like many of the master skins for my owned heros, I looked through all the heroes that I figured I might some day master and none of their skins appealed to me, so I went with the piggy. I'm already back up to 7k ish gold anyways and if I really wanted to go ham on gold farming I could get like 6-7 chars to 5 in a few hours and be back up to 20k ish.
Just figured one of the only things I can ONLY buy with gold, so why not. If I cant afford $9.99 for a hero that I desperately want in the future then I might need to find a new line of work.
And yep Im planning on slowly learning new heroes. I like Sylv a lot, and I do a lot of 8 game dailies and WoW/ specialist tasks with her on QM/AI. Havent formed a HL team yet so my "need" for a large pool of chars to choose from hasn't begun. I am aware of each characters dangers and traits simply through playing against them. Im starting to learn Malf in small doses and I'll figure out tanks afterwards.
Just not a huge fan of "grinding" chars I don't enjoy after work. Sylv is what I find most fun so I typically get home and do some games on her that I fully enjoy. Malf is pretty nice, too. It's hard when you're in solo que to grab a new hero and have fun struggling. I usually AI until 5 on heroes to save my teammates the struggle of me being in the game trying to learn builds, but AI is boring.... Push lane, grab objectives while other AI fight eachother, win game in 9-12 mins. Meh.
Uhhh...Well first off....getting 7 heroes to 5 equates to 3500 gold (plus anywhere from 500-1000 gold from playing those games...much less if you play vs AI though like you said) so that will get you to around 10,000...not 20,000. Granted, it seems like you really don't give a shit about spending a couple bucks on some heroes so gold farming isn't really an issue (though I tell myself it matters because each hero I buy is 1 less skin I can/will ultimately buy and I am addicted to buying stupid pixels lol).
The only other thing I would note is that there is a HUGE difference in understanding your opponent if you have played that hero a bunch vs if you just have an idea of what they do vs you. I can say that with absolute certainty as I was at one time, just like you...and I had only played a handful of heroes. I had a good general idea of what each hero could do vs me but knowing how they are all played is going to make you a MUCH better player than just having a general idea.
A perfect example is knowing when sylv gets envenom. I knew she got it at some point but I didn't know it was at level 4. After playing as sylv a lot I realized that shes got around 0 kill potential until she gets that skill...so I can bully her as valla and zone her from farming exp 1v1 in lane until 4.
Another example is understanding how thralls god awful heal works. NOTHING is worse than when you go to 1v1 a thrall with half your health and you are right about to kill him and BOOM he gets 394839048349 hp back and you are just like....WTF?? But knowing what level he gets his mega heal makes me a much smarter/better player.
With all that being said....it seems like you just play to have some fun after work/unwind/fuck around etc. so chances are you didn't read more than the first sentence. I can respect people who just play for fun. It's not what I like to do...but hey it's a free country...do what you like.
Oh, and one day I will justify buying that stupid piggy bank. I might never even use it (already bought a bunch of mounts) but one day I will buy it lol.
