Wetenschapsfilosofie, dat klinkt kei gaaf.
Doel van de cursus (alleen in het Engels beschikbaar)
Overall Objectives:
The course will focus on one major theme, namely the idea of cultural relativism as it is related to business studies, and will explore this theme further in two subdomains, to wit philosophy of science and social philosophy. In philosophy of science the main concepts will be 'paradigm' and 'incommensurability'. In social philosophy the main concepts will be 'property' and 'distribution of goods'. At the end of the course students will be able to identify philosophical problems, which occur with regard to the below-mentioned concepts, and be able to critically assess proposed solutions initiated by the idea that knowledge and values are relative to a method of investigation, a 'form of life' or design of society. Students will also be able to make a critical comparison between different philosophical positions in these matters.
First part: Paradigms and incommensurability (Philosophy of Science).
Sub-objectives:
This part of the course gives an introduction to Philosophy of Science, focusing on the topics of paradigm, incommensurability and relativism. Students will gain an understanding of the following concepts: scientific method, positivism, induction, deduction, verification, falsification, corroboration, theory-ladeness of observation, paradigm, anomaly, incommensurability, scientific revolution, scientific relativism, cultural relativism, form of life, hypothetico-deductive explanation, Verstehen, hermeneutics, game theory, prisoner's dilemma, Leviathan, cooperation, culture, sociobiology, evolutionary stable state, leash principle, and determinism. The concepts will be discussed in the light of the integrating idea of relativism.
Second part: Property and Distribution of Goods (Social Philosophy).
Sub-objectives:
This part of the course gives an introduction to Social Philosophy, focusing on the topics of property and the distribution of goods. Students will gain an understanding of the following concepts: utilitarianism, communitarianism, deontology, distributive justice, historical and time-slice theories, patterned and non-patterned theories, egalitarianism, international distributive justice, relativism, game theory, Rawls' theory of justice, Nozick's theory of entitlement, property rights, property acquisition, market, state, and the state of nature. Again, the concepts will be discussed in the light of the integrating idea of relativism.
Ben blij dat ik die onzin heb afgesloten (7.5 ftw).
