I am studying at the university of Groningen (I'm an international student) soon finishing preMaster and next your going for master, life here is pretty awesome (a lot of fun, young people, parties and cheap and fairly high quality drugs) but unless you are able to speak dutch you will have very big problem with being able to find job (even as a dishwasher) because in this city with population of roughly 200,000 people 25% are students = so you can just imagine how big competition you have here even for the part-time jobs as we all need money to finance our fun :P if you are thinking of coming here don't dream of getting a real job any soon without being really special (by special i dont mean better than majority but I mean being the BEST of the BEST) in whatever you wanna do. Perhaps you should apply for master/premaster programme here as well so you can both be here.

Really? Sorry to hear that. Finding a Job here I could do from away is something I've considered.

My main concerns right now are how hard it will be for me to obtain a permit to work in the Netherlands, as I'm not an EU citizen.

thats nonsense,i'm from Belgium and here its also crisis... my girlfriend lost her job a few day's ago and also she found new work in 2 day's ! u just need the will to wanna work and courage.
From an outsider... well it's best u can speak dutch if u cant its hard to find work... in netherland or belgium here. But if u wanna do it u can.

Hey Guys,

I know this is the Dutch thread, but in my experience so many people in the Netherlands speak English.

I'm a Canadian looking for a hand, In about a year or a little more, my girlfriend is considering attending university in Groningen.

If she decides to go, I'd love to go with her. My concern is how difficult would it be for someone like me (Bachelor's Degree, Political Science) to find work?

Any tips/ideas/etc. would be so helpful!

economics are crap atm but your bigger problem would be to the visum if u wanna stay longer then 6 months

then she is lucky there is no nonsense as i am allready at home for 7 months and cant get a single frickin job
and i am not only searching for work in my expertiese but on every job way below my level as well and still nothing.

i will tell u even better, in region of the netherlands every single day 300-500 A DAY are losing there jobs.
company's are broke or move to cheaper countries
then there is also the fact that currentle we have 200.000 people from poland romania and those countries here working for a year and move back
to their own country's because they can work for less here then they must pay us
