Hey,
Today I experienced scamming for the first time. Luckily it was not anything substantial for me, but the same guy got others for hefty sums (5k-15k forum gold). I can imagine this really sucks for some players. For me that much would probably be enough to stop playing, or atleast stop using d2jsp altogether (and i think this site is amazing so that would suck!). What i have is a suggestion on how to prevent scamming in the future. This may have been suggested previously, and if so i apologize, but below are my thoughts.
Why not link d2jsp accounts to the game accounts. While i know this cant be done directly, individual account names on almost any game must be unique. To verify your account, you would have to wait around for a moderator to jump in our game, verify you are the same person as the d2jsp account, and then your game account name would be added to you d2jsp profile and attached. This way if someone scams here, and tries to just make a new account the next day, it would pop up that this game account already has a d2jsp account that is banned. Obviously moderators are busy so verifying would take time, which would actually help my point. if it took alot of time and effort to get verified, people would be less likely to scam and thus have to go through the process of totally reidentifying themselves on different accounts (not to mention if they created a whole new game account as well to bypass this, theyd have to start the leveling process of their game account all over again). I know players could still make new game, d2jsp accounts, scam, and then transfer items back to the original game account thats leveled up which they were originally scamming on, but by adding extra layers of protections and hoops to jump through, i believe it would alleviate a good bit of the problem.
Maybe this has been discussed and im sure there are things im unaware of or/and am missing. Would love to dive deeper into the conversation if anyone has some thoughts. Really just killed me to see people ripped off on Ber's, infinity's, etc today simple because of their trusting/good nature, especially if we could help prevent this. I would be totally gutted personally if it happened to me. Anyway if you made it this long cheers!
*edit* i see this was discussed recently, and shot down as 'not being able to prevent the majority of scams' however the reasoning for this was not given. so i would say i personally believe this would stop atleast a good portion of scams, unless there are good arguments to the contrary. like i said, from what i read the idea was previously shot down in a different thread with no reason besides 'it wouldnt work'. Hope this doesnt sound like an attack, more of just a discussion id love to have!*edit*
