I suggest making the signature work in the same way as the avatar I.E enclosed in a fixed container.
This allowes for people to use any size they like as long as it meets the file size requirement.

The reason for this is I, and many others have (or will in the near future) mitigate to a 2K or even a 4K screen.
With most of us using the built in windows layout scaling (125% or more) most sites with static 1:1 images scale very poorly.

But when giving people the option to upload a image larger then the container, more of the image quality is preserved as it auto scales to the current windows scaling.

This is by no means a high priority issue. just thought i throw it out there.

Hope it hasn't been suggested before.

Good suggestion.

You may have some people that still don't quite understand, so maybe include a couple of screenshots demonstrating your point? Just a thought :)

I voted yes, good luck

I was a couple of seconds to late to be able to edit the post. but here is an image, better visualizing what Im talking about:

As seen in the image above, even when scaling the site up to 200% the avatar image still retains most of its sharpness.
While the same image (150x150pix) in the avatar gets blown up way out of its original proportions making a lot less sharp and a lot more blurry.

Decline.

Then people cant choose the location of their signature or use multiple images (sig+banner)

I could see part of this idea being implemented. Keeping the current signature settings seems something long term. I think with this suggestion here it would have to be an additional feature to the current system, and in some regards possible a Customer or Higher Perk.

Alternative, give users a "table" tag amongst the formatting options.
Code
[TABLE=400x150][IMG]IMAGE[/IMG][/TABLE]

This way it preservers all the current features, while enabling people some more freedom with there signatures.
