My idea is to add a feature that allows you to toggle on an “auto-delete” feature for pm folders. Each folder would have an option for this and once you toggle it on, it would allow you to set a “timer” for deletion on messages in that folder. This would only be applied to “read” messages.

Say you received 1 message. You put that message in a folder and turned on the auto-delete feature for that folder. You gave timer option a value of 3 days. The message would then be deleted 3 days after the time of receiving.
If you received the message more than 3 days ago, it would be deleted as soon as it were moved to the folder with the feature activated.

My thought is that it would make it a bit easier to maintain the pm box as well as potentially free up space on the web server.

If you would like to keep a pm, you keep it in your box or even better, archive it to make some space for more.
If you wouldn't like to keep a pm, you just delete it.

I don't see why you wouldn't take the decision above right away and wait for let's say 3 days (i.e.) if this feature would be added.
