Profile Security & Privacy

Who can and cannot view your profile?

Sort of like Facebook or Twitter (or other social media websites), we should have the option to allow our profile to only be viewed by the people we choose. Now I don't mean down to the single person, but rather options like:

` Viewable by only Friends [Yes or No]
` Viewable by d2jsp Donors [Yes or No]
` Only Viewable by Me [Yes or No]
` Viewable by Public [Yes or No]

(These are just examples)

See where I'm going with this? The 'My Photo Gallery' in your profile is a good example of d2jsp security as you can make your photos view-able to the public or just your friends. As of right now, d2jsp guests cannot view your profile, but if they create an account they can see everything. Since the evolution of d2jsp into not just a gaming forum, but a social networking community (not the best word for it but you get what I'm saying) we should have the option to better protect our accounts and privacy. I think this would allow people to be even more open to making their profiles more personal and creative. Let's face it, the years of D2 are just about over and this site will still continue to grow with or without D2, so our profiles don't need to just be all about D2. The options don't need to hide everything in your profile as I'm sure something needs to load when you click your profile link: http://forums.d2jsp.org/user.php?i=227260. For example, your 'User Stats' could be the profile default that needs to be seen by everyone. We'll let that up to Paul, but our profile needs to show our names and common stuff, I understand that.

We could limit the security to the WHOLE profile (only thing that would load is your User Stats for example) or just CERTAIN options (an example would be only allowing your personal profile pic to be shown to only friends), either way would be fine with me.

Thanks for looking and please consider my suggestion.

I guess I just don't see the reason that you'd want to hide your gaming profile from anyone or make it to where only you can see it. Example, why would you want only your friends to be able see your YouTube video & site accomplishments?

If it's personal information, use notepad rather than displaying in your profile.

When it comes to voluntarily placing information in your profile, account security & privacy is owned by you (imo).

See that's what I'm saying, it doesn't have to be all about 'gaming'. I know this is a gaming forum, but people are using it for way more things. Your profile is just not a place to put your gaming accomplishments anymore, soon it will be more than that if it isn't already. The site is a community and I know people who join it now that don't even play games. They are here to chat, graphic design and get help within the various sections d2jsp offers.

Basically, in my opinion, if the site wants to expand and continue to grow into more than a 'gaming' forum, which my impression is IT DOES, then account security customization would be great.

I get what you're saying, but where's the value in being able to hide your profile from individuals?

On Facebook & other social networking sites it makes sense because people can comment on your "profile", but this is entirely different.

My biggest gripe is new users basically being able to create an account and see everything in your profile. On FB, for example again, you can create an account, but still not see everything on someone you're 'creeping' on, etc. You have the ability to make sure your profile pictures, info and stuff is not presentable to the general public. You pick and choose what YOU want to show. I just think it would be a phenomenal enhancement to this site.

short of your credit card or phone number i don't see what they could possibly see that is a big deal.

it's the internet...privacy doesn't exist here no matter what you think.

Voted 'No'. Why? Because people usually don't put their private information in their profile.
There's really nothing that has to be hidden in your profile. If you don't want people to see it simply don't put it in a public place.

On Facebook people typically hide their photos and information from people they're not friends with or to hide their information from employers/the general public.
In this case (jsp) we're talking about a public forum. You can simply use a search engine to find most of the content on here. With that being said, be cautious of what you want people to see.
