This has indeed been suggested many times and denied, however this should not stop it from being taken in consideration once again
When it comes down to it, some people will disagree to it being in effect, and others will agree to the change being in effect.
Here is the point of view from someone who agree's
I find it a pain personally to constantly have to archive, date, and folder messages that I want to keep, since HTML is the best way to archive, messages that you archive overtime get scattered from eachother and it can be difficult to find them.
50 messages for space overall is quite small for someone who needs to keep messages for quick information, proofs, conversation hold, projects such as game events or graphic requests.
50 Is also insufficient for many people whom often PM others with assistance, or even those who use their phones to JSP like myself which makes it impossible to realistically archive messages from the phone and those tiny check boxes are hard to hit on the giant screen of a galaxy s3 (giant comparable to most other phones).
These are just a few reasons
There could be two valid solutions that would be very nice and not restrict page load time!
1: Increase the overall message box limit! from 50 to a desired higher amount!
OR
2: Messages in Folders outside Inbox would not count as messages, thust not cluttering your 50 message limit!
Just my point of view and 2 cents!

There's an export tool to export all your messages to a file on your computer for this reason sadly... They'll just tell you to use it.
Edit: it's called message archiver. It's at the very bottom of your inbox
