Hello everyone. Given that most users on the site are American, I think that it would be wise to change the name of the "World Football - Soccer" forum to "Soccer - World Football."

Nearly every day, I see people who make the mistake of confusing football with soccer because of the way the forum is named. Perhaps this simple suggestion would solve a lot of problems.

Eurotrash everywhere would be up in arms. I say yea.

Where are you getting this statistic, even? I really do not think that it is accurate.



You expect me to believe that there are hundreds and thousands of people showing up 'nearly every day', since the forum's inception, who are unable to read a three-word title in its entirety?

The human brain is looking for a single word, "football." As in American Football. Depending on their layout, they will see World Football before Soccer and will get confused. This fix would only take a minute to do so it's rather inconsequential.

I've shown you the possible benefits. Can you show me any adverse effects due to the change? I'd be interested in seeing them.

There is no science behind what you are saying. Look up any model of lexical semantics and how it is processed (e.g. Stackhouse and Wells, Hans-Werner Hunziker): we do not parse text by mentally blocking out every other adjacent word, that makes no sense at all.

The disadvantage is that you cater to a tiny minority for shallow nationalistic reasons, as per your own your own post in said subforum wishing to - as the thread is entitled - 'push American values' (HERE).

What's it hurting anyway? It's not like this is such a big deal that it negatively affects Americans, as one. Just about every other nation calls it football, so changing it to fit the vocabulary of the minority of American users here is just mindless nitpicking.

The people who visit that forum are mostly from countries who call it football, not soccer. Definite no from me, would only lead to spam.
