Rationale: How many times do you get pms about items you have already sold? How many times does an old thread that you haven't bumped in a while get posted in by someone to buy something that is already gone?

If there was an option that 4 hours from the last post, you could lock/close the topic so it goes away to archives, this could all be prevented.

This could be implemented by adding a close/lock button that appears after 4 hours, much like the "bump" button

The reason I suggest a 4 hour time period is because that would prevent people from closing a topic so that they could repost as an early bump...you'd be forced to wait the same amount of time as now so it couldn't be abused for early bumping...butit would help to reduce clutter, and prevent month old threads from being sent to the top of the page taking the place of real trade threads.

I'm no programming genius, but I would imagine that adding another button would not be that difficult to implement, and it could help to keep the site a lot cleaner.

The biggest thing to worry about is the potential abuse this can cause. Adding a 4 hour wait after the last post is a great way to eliminate that potential, however I think more can be done to ensure it. Consider these suggestions as additional requirements to unlock this idea.

~ Account must be X year(s) or older (amount is up to admins).
~ Must have a certain post count (example 7,500 or more).
~ Cannot have more than a 20% warn (the ability would be suspended beyond 20% but will be re-enabled again after dropping to 20 or below).

This makes it so that only active and responsible JSPers would be allowed to use the feature. Abuse cases would practically be non-existent at this point and there can always be ways to punish or remove it if someone does step out of line.

Edit - Voted yes!

The possibility to Close a thread is for the persons of the Mod Team.
When a topic is done, just let it die. And the topic is archived alone after a time.
In first, I voted No. and in second, it will never happen.

That's obvious. =)

We're talking about progressing the efficiency of the system, not leaving it the way it is. Not making any changes can be just as bad if not worse than making changes, the challenge is finding a balance and promoting good change.

I'm not saying the idea as it stands is the best and should be implemented immediately, but you're saying it will never happen. Why?

No. I do t think normal users should have modpowers.
Just let it die as Nico said.

This idea is simply suggesting that responsible and active users be allowed to close their own threads, not anyone else's.
It would not be comparable to the powers Moderators have.

If you still think that is too much for users, even after meeting requirements similar to what I listed earlier in this thread, then that is fine but you should explain why.

I voted no. I always make sure that I post that the item is gone after the trade to prevent this.

I completely agree that the mod team should be the only ones with access to close threads of others. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to close your own thread after a 4 hour period.

The problem isn't letting your own topic die down, the problem is that OTHERS do not, and all of a sudden a dead topic is wasting space at the top of the first page.
