I'm not a statistician, but I think the odds greatly increase above one in 36*35*34 if you require the numbers to be in order as well. I think those odds apply to the case where you choose the numbers in any order.

For example: The lottery has a 1 in 42,840 chance of picking the three numbers that I picked. But of those three numbers, there are 6 orders possible, so the odds are really i in 257,040.

I'd say it's a ripoff unless you fix the order requirement.

if the pot gets big enough

some1 smart should work out all the variables and all the possiblities, and buy EVERY ticket

if i was rich in real life, i would do that with the lottery ^.^

as long as in the end i made profit lmao

Do the math, schlag. You're wrong.

36*35*34 = ORDERED odds.

Unordered would be something like 36+35+34+33+32+31+30...

Which is MUCH less.

So, in short, yeah, you're dead wrong. Go join #math on irc.freenode.org and ask them if you don't believe me.

Here's an easier example. Numbers 1-4, pick 3, cannot repeat, order matters. For order matters, there are 4*3*2 possibilities, or 24 possibilities. For unordered, there are only 4 possibilities.

I'll list them out, if you don't believe me.

1,2,3
1,2,4
1,3,4
2,3,4

Remember, that's the "order doesn't matter list". That's a 1:4 chance of winning vs. the 1:24 of ordered, which is simple math, 4*3*2.

I forget the formula for unordered, but do all the combos of ordered, if you don't believe 24 is the max. It is. tongue.gif

Yeah you're right the unordered odds are 42840 divided by 6, which is 1 in 7140...
